TDM1874 Brewery The Bottom Line

If you’re in the area then get down to TDM1874. The beers are well priced, tasty, and served well and all the prices include tax on the menu. The whole place is non-smoking and if you’re lucky, you might even get the chance to meet George, the British brewer, when he is serving. There is also no table charge and has a small outside drinking area – though it is a bit hairy there when the cars are speeding by. The only downside to TDM1874 is that it is in the middle of nowhere, so maybe an excuse is needed to get down there.

Wine or beer or sake?

TDM1874 Brewery Full Review

TDM1874 opened in November 2016 though it has a long history as it’s part of a sakaya that specialise in the retail of alcohol to restaurants and also wholesale in the area. It started out as a retail store with a huge sake and wine selection, before the brewery opened up later in December 2017. The name “TDM1874” stands for Ten Days Market, which happens to be Tokaichiba (十日市場) in English and also when the original sakaya opened in 1874. If that seems a long time ago, then putting into the traditional Japanese years, it was in Meiji 7.

The brewpub and shop are located in Tokaichiba, on the JR Yokohama Line, and it’s about a 10-minute walk through the houses to get there. It’s not the most convenient place to go for a beer by train, I have to admit, but then looking at Google Maps and seeing it’s only 20 minutes by car from my house is pretty dangerous, considering Japan has a strict “no drinking and driving” law. The whole place is non-smoking plus there is no table charge either at TDM1874. The menu for beer is in English though the food menus are in Japanese but the staff will explain in English. There is space inside for about 20 people seated, though you can stand up if you can find some space, and there is space for drinking outside when the weather is nice.

TDM1874 does have a brewpub and they only offer their own beers on tap – along with Asahi Super Dry, so you can bring your non-craft beer drinking friends along for some beers too. They have four of their own beers on tap, which vary throughout the year, and they come in two sizes – UK half-pint (284ml) from ¥420 to ¥450, and US pints (470ml) from ¥700 to ¥750. The prices on the beer menu don’t include tax, but the prices on the menu at the register do include tax. There wasn’t a happy hour nor were there any beer flights, but at these prices, it’s very easy to try all four for less than a beer flight in most bars. The beers were served up well, and when the kegs finally kicked, we kindly got given the beer for free. Can’t argue with that. If you want to drink bottles though, they’re for takeaway only – no trying to consume them on the premises nor outside in the small drinking area.

The food at TDM1874 is more snack based than meals; however, there were larger items on such as pizzas and muscles, which looked amazing when some people ordered them. Even better, there are chips on the menu, but we didn’t have any on the day as I kind of forgot to order them due to wanting to drink beer that day. The chicken was very nice though I wish I had some more of it.

Hi! Have you tried the Sushi place called “Iwateya,” right across fromTDM 1874? It’s the best place to go after drinking some pints of beer. Not only Sushi, but their miso soup is also delicious too. This sushi place is owned by a nice old couple. They treated us very kindly!

Thanks for the comment! Great to hear you liked TDM 1874 – should go there more often but don’t get the time! George is making some cracking beers. Have you tried the Star Dust yet?
