In A Daze Gonbe IPA is a 6.5% American IPA from In A Daze Brewing, based in Ina, in Nagano, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup, and can be found in cans and on draught across Japan. In A Daze Gonbe IPA is brewed using locally grown Kamiina rice. In A Daze Gonbe IPA takes its name from the valley pass that was built to connect Ina city with Kiso back in 1696 to help support the community in Ina who did not have enough rice to sustain them throughout the year.

In A Daze Gonbe IPA : Aroma & Taste

In A Daze Gonbe IPA poured out a cloudy golden colour with fair number of random bubbles around the edge of the glass that didn’t linger or build up to any noticeable solid head. The aroma was peculiar one – there wasn’t any discernible rice aroma to the beer – no sake like aromas or rice nose – though there was a light fruitiness to In A Daze Gonbe IPA. The citrus smells of lemon and grapefruit were present, but they were muted. When In A Daze Gonbe IPA warmed up though there was some noticeable oxidation to the beer – not enough to be off putting but enough to be noticeable and it wasn’t supposed to be there.

The body did have some bitterness to it, but it was faint and fleeting. The citrus flavours were again muted with just a very faint citrus and grapefruit flavour to the body. However, the oxidation kicked in once In A Daze Gonbe IPA had warmed up and made it through. I should have guessed as when I poured out In A Daze Gonbe IPA, there were noticeable bits of sediment that made their way into the glass. Take a look at the picture again and you’ll see them.

In A Daze Gonbe IPA : The Bottom Line

In A Daze Gonbe IPA wasn’t a drain pour but it wasn’t a good beer – oxidation in the aroma and nose, in spite of being fresh, made for an unpleasant drinking in the end.
