Two Rabbits Barrel Aged Christmas Ale is a 10% strong ale from Two Rabbits Brewing Company, based in Omihachiman, in Shiga, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition lineup and can be found in cans, though we’re not sure about on tap – fingers crossed it is though! Every year, Two Rabbits Brewing Company makes a Christmas beer, with this year being no exception but they upped the ante with this being a souped up version – it’s barrel aged and 10% for crying out loud! It also contains dried fruits and some spices.

Two Rabbits Barrel Aged Christmas Ale : Aroma & Taste

Two Rabbits Barrel Aged Christmas Ale poured out a deep hazel chestnut colour with barely any head to it. What head there was faded fast to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. The aroma though was a mixture of everything good about the smells in a Christmas kitchen – caramel from the malts with a hint of creaminess, the dried fruits bringing along notes of raisins and plums, but the spices brought it all together. Once Two Rabbits Barrel Aged Christmas Ale had warmed up, there was some note of woodiness to the beer, but not as potent as the name would suggest – not a bad thing by any means.

The body to Two Rabbits Barrel Aged Christmas Ale was as delicious as the aroma led me to believe it would be. Christmas in a can would be a good summary, without the turkey of course. Lots of dried fruit flavours with raisins and plums supporting the caramel malts. The spices were present of course, but not overpowering, with nutmeg and cinnamon being the two main ones to come through. The heat from the alcohol was not a surprise at 10%, but it wasn’t a hot alcohol heat, more warming than anything. In the aftertaste, it was mostly the dried fruits and spices that lingered through, with just a sprinkling of caramel.

Two Rabbits Barrel Aged Christmas Ale : The Bottom Line

It’s a shame that this is limited to a small batch as Two Rabbits Barrel Aged Christmas Ale is a quintessential Christmas beer now.
