Tokyo Aleworks Center Gai is a 7% American IPA from Tokyo Aleworks, based in Itabashi, in Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo Aleworks Center Gai is part of their regular lineup, and can be found in both bottles and on tap. Tokyo Aleworks Center Gai uses 5 different kinds of malt, and 6 different types of hops during the brewing process, with Idaho 7 being used as a dry hop.

Tokyo Aleworks Center Gai Aroma and Taste

Tokyo Aleworks Center Gai poured out a deep golden brown colour with a small amount of white head on top that faded fast to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. Tokyo Aleworks Center Gai had a weird aroma on it that I couldn’t quite pin down – it was citrusy but not too sure it was astringent; sweet but not a discernible caramel or crystal like aroma. There were some aromas though that were easier to distinguish with some plum and resinous notes coming though, but there was a really a lot of aromas that seemed to not really balance well with everything going on.

The body was more cohesive than the nose, with a distinct hoppy bitterness starting off Tokyo Aleworks Center Gai, which then moved into more classic West Coast IPA territory with a smooth resinous body and citrus flavours coming through. The malt sweetness was softer than in the nose but still could have done with a bit more sweetness to kind of help accentuate the hops a bit more. Tokyo Aleworks Center Gai finished off though with some butteriness in the body, was it deliberate or not? It’s hard to know at times but the resinous body helped bring back the taste.

Tokyo Aleworks Center Gai The Bottom Line

Tokyo Aleworks Center Gai is a mish mash of things going on – very much like Center Gai.
