Vertere Ambrax is 6.5% fruited sour from Vertere, based in Oku-tama, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability at the time of writing is unknown. Vertere Ambrax is brewed using blueberry juice, lactose, and also vanilla beans.
Vertere Ambrax Aroma and Taste
Vertere Ambrax poured out a lurid pinkish-purple colour with a surprising amount of frothy, pinkish head on top, though the head didn’t last long and collapsed into a few bubbles around the side of the glass. The aroma was first of a tinge of sourness, before transcending to a light fruity blueberry tartness, and then back to the sourness. In spite of the lactose and vanilla beans having been added, there was no discernable aroma of either, both when Vertere Ambrax was chilled and when it had warmed up.
With Vertere Ambrax being a sour beer, I expected it to be sour, and Vertere didn’t let me down. There wasn’t a complexity to Vertere Ambrax that wood-aged sours have, so the sourness was on the one-dimensional side of drinking. However, the tartness from the blueberries did bring a slight change of taste to the beer. The body did produce a little bit of light creaminess, though it was fleeting and only noticeable once Vertere Ambrax had warmed up. The blueberries were the most dominant flavour throughout drinking, but every once in a while, the sourness did came back through just to stop you from getting too comfortable with the beer. The aftertaste was more of the same – but I really couldn’t find the vanilla flavour in the beer.
