Black Tide Kesemoi is a 6% NE-IPA from Black Tide Brewing, based in Kesenuma, in Miyagi, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both cans and on tap at various places across Japan. Black Tide Kesemoi is brewed using Galaxy, Amarillo, Sultana, and Citra hops, and takes its name from the Japanese “けせもい=静かな海” which supposedly means quiet sea.

Black Tide Kesemoi Aroma and Taste

Black Tide Kesemoi poured out a very cloudy orange colour with a plump white head on top that clung to the side of the glass during drinking, leaving streaky white marks as the beer went down. The aroma was a tropical fruity one, with lashings of mango, pineapple, and guava, with also some hints of lemon and grapefruit too once Black Tide Kesemoi had warmed up. There was also some malt sweetness that came though, with just a hint of oat creaminess to boot, though that only came through after Black Tide Kesemoi had warmed up somewhat.

NE-IPA are often juice-like, and Black Tide Kesemoi was no different. It had a thick, gloopy body that was, *shudder* juicy, and had a massive tropical backbone to it. The guava, mango, and pineapple were bold, yet smooth; sweet, yet balanced. The lemon and grapefruit citrus flavours permeated through, again after the beer had been given some time to warm up, but the thickness of the beer meant Black Tide Kesemoi was a slow drinking one. No doubt you could probably knock this back quickly, but then you would miss some of the flavours develop through. For a NE-IPA, there was a distinct bitterness to Black Tide Kesemoi but it wasn’t overpowering.

Black Tide Kesemoi The Bottom Line

Lots going on in Black Tide Kesemoi, but a good, solid beer when fresh.
