Kyoto Brewing Koh by Kyoto Brewing Company

Kyoto Brewing Koh is a 6% American IPA from Kyoto Brewing Company, based in Kyoto, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition lineup, and can be found in both bottles and on tap, though its availability at the time of writing is unknown. Kyoto Brewing Koh is part of the Kyoto Brewing experimental range where they take a beer style, and change something about it, while keeping other parts of the beer the same. Kyoto Brewing Koh takes an approach to minerals in water, with it being the “harder” version of the beer, with a mineral content of 324ppm and a water profile similar to a Burton water profile, compared to its softer sibling, Kyoto Brewing Nan. Kyoto Brewing Koh is also brewed using a single hop, with imported Simcoe hops being the pick of choice.

Kyoto Brewing Koh Aroma and Taste

Kyoto Brewing Koh poured out a dark golden colour with a plump white head on top that clung to the side of the glass during drinking. The aroma though was punchier than the Kyoto Brewing Nan, with a punchy lemon aroma coming through, alongside a light dusting of pilsner malt to it. There wasn’t much more in terms of hoppiness going on, but what was present, was pleasant.

The hardness of the water gave a punchy bitterness from the hops, but it wasn’t overpowering. The flavour was a citrus lemon one, though it didn’t really segue into anything beyond that, in spite of letting it warm up for a while. The body was much drier too than the Kyoto Brewing Nan with a slight sharpness from the water – not as salty as a NE-IPA – but there was a more grainy-like texture to the flavour. The hops lingered long into the aftertaste with Kyoto Brewing Koh, with the same lemon grainy flavour.

Kyoto Brewing Koh The Bottom Line

Out of the two beers, I preferred this one.
