West Coast In League With Centenn is a 6% West Coast IPA from West Coast Brewing Company, based in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their collaborative lineup and can be found in both cans and on tap. West Coast In League With Centenn is brewed using with Citra, Cascade, Southern Cross and a boatload of Centennial in the boil. West Coast In League With Centenn was brewed for the 4th anniversary celebration for Titans Otsuka – an American craft beer and bottle bar.

West Coast In League With Centenn Aroma and Taste

West Coast In League With Centenn poured out a light golden colour with little haze to it – that’s just some condensation on the side of the glass that you can see there. In spite of it using “a boatload” of Centennial hops, West Coast In League With Centenn was more tropical than resiny – something that while welcoming, was a little disappointing as I love me some Centennial dankness in my beer. The tropical aromas seemed to be mango and pineapple, with lots of citrus lemon and grapefruit once the beer had been given some time to warm up. Though West Coast In League With Centenn is styled as a West Coast IPA, the brewers had taken ahold of the crystal reigns and not gone overboard on it, with a hint of sweetness being present but not enough to become cloying.

The bitterness was prevalent from the start of West Coast In League With Centenn, though it was rather restrained and not as overpowering as I thought it was going to be. Had I been spoilt by potentially over-hopped West Coast IPAs in the past? The mango and pineapple flavours were the first ones from the hops to come through, with some lemon and grapefruit also floating around on the palate. The malts and hops were well balanced, with the sweetness of the crystal malt cutting through the citrus bite enough to be noticed but not enough to become cloying. The dry and crisp body also helped to bring the flavours together in the aftertaste with a mix of the hop flavours and malt sweetness just lingering enough to be welcome but not too welcoming.
