Devilcraft Darkshine is a 5% schwarzbier from Devilcraft Brewery, based in Shinagawa, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their draft line up, though due to COVID-19, it began to be bottled. As such, its availability at the time of writing is unknown. Devilcraft Darkshine is brewed using German Pilsner, Vienna, and Munich malts alongside some specialty malts.

Devilcraft Darkshine poured out a pitch black color though when heard up to the light, it was more a dark brown colour – but that’s just being picky. There was a small amount of tan coloured head though what there was did fade to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. Devilcraft Darkshine had a rich roasted malt aroma to it, with some hints of caramel and light noble hops to it. A fairly standard schwarzbier aroma to it – but that’s not a bad thing by any means as I do like a well made and solid schwarzbier.

The body though wasn’t as carbonated as I would have liked for a schwarzbier, considering the style of beer is based on lagers which tend to have more carbonation to them. That left me thinking that Devilcraft Darkshine was a slightly more carbonated porter than an actual schwarzbier. The caramel flavours came through first, with some hints of roasted black malt, but without the black malt acridity that can sometimes come with them when the brewers steep the dark malts for too long. Devilcraft Darkshine had a crisp and dry body to it as warmed up, leaving a faint noble and black malt flavour in the aftertaste.

Devilcraft Darkshine The Bottom Line

Devilcraft Darkshine is a good beer but needs a bit more carbonation to lift it up to great for me.
