Kyoto Shunkashuto Spring is a 6.0% Belgian Saison from Kyoto Brewing Company, based in Kyoto, Japan. It’s part of their spring seasonal lineup and can be found both on tap and in bottles. It’s brewed using Pilsner, Munich, and Wheat malts, with the hops being Hallertau Mittelfruh for bittering, and Styrian Goldings Bobek with Hallertau Mittelfruh for aroma. As the name suggests, Kyoto Shunkashuto Spring is the spring version of this beer.

Kyoto Shunkashuto Spring Aroma and Taste

Kyoto Shunkashuto Spring pours out a light golden orange colour with a fluffy white head on top that faded fast to leave a few bubbles around the side of the glass. The nose was one of a classic saison – earthy and noble with some phenols and fruitiness coming from the yeast. As Kyoto Shunkashuto Spring warmed up, those same fruity and phenolic aromas became stronger, but not unpleasant though. There was a faint hint of sweetness to the malts as well, but it wasn’t cloying, just merely dancing nicely with the aromas from the hops and yeast.

The body to Kyoto Shunkashuto Spring was a sharp, dry one, with some hint of sweetness to it. However, the main star of the show was really the yeast. It brought a light phenolic fruitiness to the body though don’t think the hops weren’t coming along for the ride either. Kyoto Shunkashuto Spring had a lingering earthy, noble quality to it, along with a faint hint of alcohol heat to it too. Once Kyoto Shunkashuto Spring had warmed up, it had a slight dusting of spicy pepper notes to it, just enough to give it a little bit of a kick, but not enough to detract away from the other flavours going on.
