Uchu Saturn by Uchu Brewing

Uchu Saturn is an 11% imperial stout from Uchu Brewing, based in Yamanashi, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition lineup, and can be found in both bottles and on tap. Uchu Saturn is a collaborative beer with Dojo Training, and is brewed using bananas, oats, lactose, and also vanilla beans as part of the adjunct bill. At the time of writing, it’s unknown whether Uchu Saturn is a one-off or not.

Uchu Saturn Aroma and Taste

Uchu Saturn poured out a dark brownish black colour with a thin slightly off-white head on top that faded to a few bubbles around the edge of the glass. As with most Uchu Brewing’s efforts, the lactose was strong in this one, but with a hint of vanilla to take off some of the edge. In terms of malts, Uchu Saturn had a light roasted malt aroma to it, with just a hint of acrid black malt to it, but it really did lack a distinctive or bold imperial stout aroma that I have come to associate with this style of beer. Once Uchu Saturn had warmed up, some coffee and a light dusting of chocolate came through, but once again, it was quite light.

The body was also as thin as the nose – there was no stick-to-your-ribs character to the body of the beer, but at least it kind of tasted like an imperial stout. Kudos to Uchu Brewing for trying to make something different than a hazy beer, but the lack of bold flavours in Uchu Saturn really held it back. The lactose and vanilla was interesting enough to stand out from the rest of the flavours, and the 11% alcohol was well-hidden – no sense of booziness in this beer. But the disappointment was strong in this one.

Uchu Saturn The Bottom

I get the adjuncts but the body lacks, well, body. Tasted more like an adjunct infused schwarz than an actual imperial stout.
