Vertere Aurora is a 6% saison from Vertere, based in Oku-tama, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in cans and on tap in a limited number of places. It’s brewed using Pale 2 Row, Maris Otter, Okutama Barley, Pilsner, wheat and uses Sorachi Ace, Huell Melon hops.

Vertere Aurora Aroma and Taste

Vertere Aurora was lively – so much so that I was expecting there to be yeast in the bottom of the can once the beer had been poured out into the glass*. The body was a slightly darker than expected golden colour with a large, plump, fluffy white head on tap that was sticky and clung to the side of the glass throughout drinking. There was a subtle musty aroma to Vertere Aurora with some phenolics coming along for the ride, but it wasn’t as clean smelling as I was hoping for. I’m not a big fan of Sorachi Ace hops as when they are used in too great an amount, they can bring an onion aroma to a beer, and Vertere Aurora had just a little bit too much added to it. That lingering oniony aroma came through a bit more than I would have like (see not at all!) in a beer. It wasn’t off-putting and nor did it make Vertere Aurora undrinkable but it was stuck in my head.

Going back to what I said about being clean, the body had some stickiness to it that made those phenolic and onion flavours just outstay their welcome a bit too long. I did have high hopes for Vertere Aurora but I just felt disappointed throughout drinking as it ended up being a slightly-better-than-usual homebrew effort.
