Hansharo Kamugi is a 5% English pale ale from Hansharo Beer, based in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition range and can be found in both bottles and on tap across Japan. Hansharo Kamugi is brewed using locally roasted coffee beans from Ferret Coffee. At the time of writing, it’s unknown whether Hansharo Kamugi is a one-off or not.

Hansharo Kamugi Aroma and Taste

Let’s get this out of the way – Hansharo Kamugi was a bottle bomb. It was well within its best before date but bloody hell – the head just didn’t stop developing. Every time I spooned some of it out, Hansharo Kamugi made more of it and it kepy overflowing. Once it had settled down, it had a rusty brown colour with a very plump head on top that consisted of large off-white tan bubbles. The initial aroma to Hansharo Kamugi was a strong coffee one with hints of caramel coming through. Nothing too out of the blue but the coffee aroma was a smooth one – no acridness or overly bitter notes. There wasn’t any discernible hoppiness though that was no doubt due to the coffee aromas.

It goes without saying but Hansharo Kamugi was over-carbed – it was tough to drink due to it being so gassy. It had the levels of a bottle of homebrew that had been forgotten about and that had already been primed and allow to secondary ferment in a bottle. However, the body had a nice nutty malt flavour to it with the coffee being smooth and roasted. Hansharo Kamugi would have been nicer though if it hadn’t been so gassy. The flavours never really got past the coffee and nutty malts, even when it had warmed up.

Hansharo Kamugi The Bottom Line

Hansharo Kamugi is simple pale ale infused with coffee – nothing spectacular but nice to try.
