Barchie’s Kamakura The Bottom Line

Barchie’s Kamakura was a great little find for us and we’re definitely going back down there – but for the food and not for the beer. Not to say that the beer is bad, but the narrow range of taps meant that it was pretty much limited to one or two types of beer. Make sure you do take some clothes freshener with you though as Barchie’s does get pretty smokey due to the BBQ and not due to cigarettes as the whole place is non-smoking. The staff are really friendly and accommodating too, with them helpfully trying to explain in English what things were without me asking. I guess every bar has its downside and with Barchie’s it would be that it gets busy quickly and also noisy too when it is full up. The number of vegetarian dishes is also rather limited too.

Barchie’s Kamakura The Full Review

While hunting for BBQ in Kanagawa for a forthcoming guide, Barchie’s came up on search and also came highly recommended from a friend who lives in Kamakura. She has sworn that the bar offers up some tasty non-American BBQ along with craft beer and is also the first of its kind in the area. Barchie’s opened in December 2015 – a while back but some places are worth taking their time in finding.

Barchie’s is located on the “wrong” side of Kamakura – the non-touristy side it seems. Having spent 15 years in Japan, it was actually the first time for me to travel around the west side of Kamakura. The bar is located less than a five minute walk from the station. Barchie’s is non-smoking, besides the BBQ smoke, and has space for about 18 people inside, with 14 people at the various tables and sofas, and space for 4 people at the counter. There is also no table charge throughout the day too.

The tap list at Barchie’s is small – only four taps, with one of those dedicated to Heartland, but the other three are craft beers. With a narrow range of taps, I would have liked to have seen some variety of beers on tap, rather than just IPAs and pale ales but guess those styles are the popular ones still. The beers come in one size – 350ml from ¥850, but the prices do include tax. There is no happy hour, beer flights, or takeaway beers though.

The food at Barchie’s is heavily geared towards meats and smoked food – though there are some choices for vegetarians on the menu. The menus is in both Japanese and English so there are no problems in ordering though as the food is freshly prepared, make sure you have some patience as it is worth the wait. All of the prices include tax too.
