Craft Beer Ghent The Bottom Line

If you’re desperate for craft beer and there’s nowhere else in the area, then I guess Craft Beer Ghent is worthy of a visit, but there’s so much that it does wrong that personally I would give it a wide miss unless you’re really wanting some craft beer. When we went, Craft Beer Ghent was smoky, lacked friendliness, and most importantly, lacked beer – a big downer in our books. Craft Beer Ghent also had a table charge and also the prices didn’t include tax. If you’re able to read and speak Japanese, then you could get away with ordering some food and beer here but nothing on the menus was in English and the owner didn’t make any effort to help out.

Craft Beer Ghent The Full Review

Craft Beer Ghent was the last bar on our first day in Nagoya – I was up for some more drinking in a different part of town and Craft Beer Ghent came up on our map. (Yes, we use our maps as well to find places). Craft Beer Ghent opened in July 2015 and since then, seemed to have grown a cult following as we had heard mixed opinions about it before going.

Craft Beer Ghent is located about 10 minutes from Yabachō and Sakae stations but is a very easy place to miss. The only thing that stands out about the place is a small sign on the street as the actual bar itself is in the basement of a building, along with a plethora of other small drinking establishments. Craft Beer Ghent is a fully smoking place, but also says it is children friendly – not smoking we’d readily put together to be honest. There is space for about 11 people inside, with 7 at the counter and another 4 at some low tables if they sit close together. There is also a ¥500 table charge outside of the main lunch hours of 14:00 – 18:00.

There are supposed to be 7 taps on at Craft Beer Ghent with a mix of both domestic and primarily American imports, though when we went, all but 3 had blown and there was no sign of new ones coming on. Make that 2 because as soon as we had ordered a beer, another keg blew. The beers come in two sizes: regular (230ml) from ¥750 to 850 and large (400ml) from ¥1250 to ¥1500, making Craft Beer Ghent a very expensive place to drink. Tax was not included and there were no happy hour or beer flight options too. There are some bottles on sale too, but we didn’t buy any due to the prices being higher than the draft beers.

The food at Craft Beer Ghent was minimalistic at best. There’s not much on offer with mostly some tapas style dishes on the menu and an occasional larger meal, but that was during the later stages of the evening.
