Craft Beer Keg Nagoya The Bottom Line

Craft Beer Keg Nagoya is more of an upmarket kind of craft beer bar than usual, but don’t let that detract you from it. The bar has a chilled-out atmosphere, and is even better when the big bay doors are opened up. The prices aren’t as high as to be expected but seeing as it’s the grandad of craft beer bars in the area, Craft Beer Keg Nagoya know the market well. The whole place is non-smoking and doesn’t have a table charge either. There wasn’t any wifi that we picked up on, but there are some English menus and also some vegetarian options on the menu too.

Craft Beer Keg Nagoya The Full Review

Craft Beer Keg Nagoya opened in April 2009 and since then, has long been considered to be the bar that started off the craft beer boom in the Nagoya area. Owned by Sakaya Okadaya, Craft Beer Keg Nagoya was opened to try and encourage local drinkers to drink local beer – rather than the imports that could be found across the city.

Craft Beer Keg Nagoya is located between Hisayadori and Sakaemachi stations on the Nagoya city subway and is about a 5 minute walk from both of them. Craft Beer Keg Nagoya has space for about 30 people inside, with 6 seats at the counter, and another 24 seats located around the bar. Like some other places in Nagoya, Craft Beer Keg Nagoya also has some bay doors that open up when the weather is nice – and you should definitely sit near there. Outside drinking is non-existant in most cities in Japan, so when chances like this turn up, take them. The whole place is non-smoking and there is also no table charge either at Craft Beer Keg Nagoya.

The tap list at Craft Beer Keg Nagoya is made up solely of domestic beers with 12 taps and also a hand pump for ales. The beers come in two sizes: 9oz / 270ml for ¥680 to ¥900, while 14oz / 420ml ranges from ¥1,080 to ¥1,300. There’s no happy hour, nor any beer flights – a shame with the last one considering the variety of beers on tap. The beers were served reasonably well – they were topped up when we asked them to do so.

 Craft Beer Keg Nagoya Food・ケグナゴヤフード

The food at Craft Beer Keg Nagoya is your typical craft beer bar – a few fried pieces here and there, with of course some chips. However, and this was a big downer for me – if you’re going to put cheese on your chips then make sure you drown them in cheese – be it melted or grated. Sprinkling a little bit of cheese on top and then selling it as cheesy chips is a big no-no in our books.
