Vertere Meconopsis is a 6.8% American IPA from Vertere, based in Okutama, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their draft lineup and can be found in a small number of bars across Japan. Vertere Meconopsis is brewed with Maris Otter, Munich t2, Pilsner, and Vienna malts, alongside Columbus, Azacca, Centennial, Chinook, Cascade, and Citra hops.

Vertere Meconopsis Aroma and Taste

Vertere Meconopsis poured out a dark amber colour with a thin white head on top. There was a faint amount of tropical fruits coming off of it – some pineapple here, a little bit of lemon there. What was interesting about Vertere Meconopsis was the pine-like aroma that appeared once it had been given the chance to warm up – a rarity I know in some of these beer reviews. It’s not always drink and sink – sometimes we do like to take out time. The beer also had some semblance of caramel sweetness to it – not much, but just enough to let you know that someone had added something besides the hops.

Vertere Meconopsis started off with a subtle bitterness but it was the flavoursome hops that brought everything together. The tropical punch of pineapple along with the vibrant lemon contrasted off the pine-like flavour to the beer. It was pretty much your straight forward IPA from then onwards – not a bad thing, but it has been done before. A lingering sticky pine flavour stuck to the palate before fading to a slight biscuit malt flavour with hints of caramel too.

Vertere Meconopsis The Bottom Line

Vertere Meconopsis isn’t a bad IPA, but what it offers up has been done numerous times before.
