Dk Art Café The Bottom Line

Dk Art Café is just a weird and surreal place to drink beer in – so much so that you have to go for one just to see what we’re on about. Would we go again for more beers? No. Of course you’re not going to find rare or niche craft beer here but you may end up being completely chilled out with the music and digital art work going on around you. The whole place is non-smoking and has no table charge before 7pm, with a ¥300 added on after 7pm. Prices do not include any tax, so factor that into the bill at the end of the drinking. None of the menus are in English either, nor do the staff speak any English either, so make sure you go with someone who can understand and speak Japanese.

Dk Art Café The Full Review

Dk Art Café opened in May 2016 and was heralded in as a new type of café – one managed by students from KIT (Kanazawa Institute of Technology), with the DK referring to the Digital Kakejiku (hanging scroll) that was designed by Akira Hasegawa. The café also has the distinction of being the first of its kind in the world – though in this modern day and age, I’d take that with a huge pinch of salt. It’s located in one of the main shopping streets to the south of Kanazawa Castle, it’s loud artwork means it’s hard to walk past Dk Art Café and not want to go in and see what it is all about.

The inside of Dk Art Café really does have to be seen to be believed – it’s the kind of place you’d end up either after some lucid awakening or some illicit substances. It’s dreamlike state of music and visuals would soothe even the savage beast; however, the chairs probably help by being so damn low. There are about 30 seats dotted over two floors, although mind your head, as I didn’t and ended up smacking it against one of the door frames as I went to the toilet. The whole place is non-smoking and there is also no table charge either before 7pm, but after that, it’s ¥300 per person with tax added later.

Craft beer bars in Kanazawa are very proud of their local beers, and Dk Art Café is another addition to that list. There are only beers on from Kanazawa Hyakumangoku on tap, with beers coming in three sizes: small (330ml) for ¥700, large (500ml) for ¥1000, or a two beer sampler set of 150ml for ¥800. None of the prices include tax so add that onto the end of drinking. The 500ml does offer the best value for money, and thankfully the semi-yard of ale glass is plastic but just be careful not to spill it! There is no happy hour nor takeaway beers – leave those 500ml glasses at the bar!

Having eaten a fair amount at Korinbo Jibiruba, I didn’t get the chance to eat anything at Dk Art Café but from what the menu had, it was mostly snack food, with things like peanuts, small bowls of granola, and some uncooked foods.
