Ramen & Bar Abri Kanazawa The Bottom Line

It may have been the last bar on the first night of our run in Kanazawa, but Ramen & Bar Abri Kanazawa should definitely have been earlier. With its decent selection of beers that come in three (reasonably) priced sizes, Ramen & Bar Abri Kanazawa also scores highly on both the atmosphere and food too. I would definitely visit Ramen & Bar Abri Kanazawa again when I am in the area too! The whole place is non-smoking and also includes tax in the price too. The only downside to the place is the mandatory service charge of 10% that gets added onto your bill if you are seated after 10pm – call it a reverse happy hour, similar to El Nubichinom in Noge.

Ramen & Bar Abri Kanazawa The Full Review

I had actually heard of Ramen & Bar Abri Ebisu before Ramen & Bar Abri Kanazawa, not knowing they were part of the same “chain” – if you can call two bars a chain that is. Located just off the main shopping street, it’s located in an area reminiscent of Tokyo’s Meijujingu – lots of upmarket shops with old style architecture along a narrow open river which I avoided falling in to during my time in Kanazawa. This location opened in April 2013 and is one of the older craft beer establishments in the city of Kanazawa.

From the outside, it’s hard to believe that the focus of Ramen & Bar Abri Kanazawa is ramen – it’s clean white exterior goes against the notion of how ramen places should be, but step inside and it’s a more familiar site. Small but not cramped, warm but not boiling, smells but not smelly. There is space for about 12 people inside, with 6 at the counter and spaces at tables for another 6 people. The whole place is non-smoking and there is no table charge before 10pm. However, go after and you have a 10% service charge added onto your bill – guessing they want people to leave early so they can close up shop for the night.

There are six taps of beer on at Ramen & Bar Abri Kanazawa, with a heavy leaning towards domestic craft beers, with Kanazawa being a strong focus. The beers come in three sizes: small (260ml) from ¥800, medium (375ml) from ¥980, and large (510ml) from ¥1180. All the prices include tax though there is no happy hour or beer flights going. It would have been nice to have had one too with such a varying amount of beers on tap – especially with a 10% barleywine on the go too.

If the name of the bar wasn’t a big enough of a hint, the main focus on food at Ramen & Bar Abri Kanazawa also includes oden too. I had some of the oden and it was slightly better than convenience stuff but then you miss out on those lovely extra flavours of the eggs stewing away.
