Rydeen IPA by Sarukurayama Beer

Rydeen IPA is a 6% American IPA from Sarukurayama Beer, based in Uonuma, in Niigata, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range and can be found in both bottles and on tap across Japan. Rydeen IPA was first released in 2018 as part of the Sakurayama Beer range, a renewal if you’d like to label it as something, from Hakkaisan Izumi Beer.

Rydeen IPA Aroma and Taste

Rydeen IPA poured out a slight hazy dark golden orange colour with a plump white head on top. The head clung to the side of the glass as the beer went down so well you could count how many tries it took me to finish it (12 for those who are wondering). For an American IPA, Rydeen IPA smelt damp and musty – almost as if the hops used were stale or old. There was some semblance of citrus nose to it but what there was didn’t smell fresh or potent.

With that being said, the body did have an initial bitterness to it that made me sit up with surprise but alas, it lacked body and staying power. The citrus notes were welcoming but lacked real presence or staying power, making Rydeen IPA a limp American IPA. The malts had a subtle biscuit flavour to them but overall, Rydeen IPA was rather insipid and boring.

Rydeen IPA The Bottom Line

American IPAs aren’t hard to make and are a dime a dozen in Japan – Rydeen IPA is a miss and you can do so much better.
