Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale is a 7% gose beer from Kiuchi Shuzo, based in Naka city, in Ibaraki, Japan. Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale used to be part of their overseas-only range, but has recently been seen domestically. It’s brewed green sour plum (ume) and Japanese sea salt (moshio) which is represented in the kanji on the label with 塩梅. At the time of writing, Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale can be found in bottles only.

Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale Aroma and Taste

I’ve been looking for Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale for ages – having heard of a Japanese-brewed gose and not finding one kind of became a mythical pot of gold. I found out in Tap & Growler and picked up two – not going to let this one go so easily.

Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale poured out a hazy dark orange colour with a bare minimum of head on top. What head it had, faded to a few bubbles around the edge of the glass that popped quickly. The sour plum aroma was clear from the first sniff to the last sip, with a subtle sea water aroma going on too. A fruity sour note comes through too, but it’s pleasant rather than being an off-flavour.

The body was just right on the hot day that I drank Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale. The salty sour flavours play off each other nicely and the plummy body brought a soft edge to the beer, taking off some of sour notes once Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale had warmed up. It wasn’t heavily carbonated either and as such, it could easily have been crushed if I hadn’t worried about getting more.

Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale The Bottom Line

Looking to get into gose? I’d recommend Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale – a good little surprise.
