Locobeer Kaori no Nama is a 5% kölsch style beer from Locobeer, based in Chiba, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range of craft beer and can be found in both bottles and on tap. It’s brewed to a traditional German recipe and Locobeer uses imported noble hops – though which ones is unknown at the time of writing.

Little to no head on this beer.

Locobeer Kaori no Nama Aroma and Taste

Locobeer Kaori no Nama poured out a bright golden orange colour with a minimal amount of head on top – what there was had a clear white colour though it disappeared very quickly to a thin ring around the side of the glass. There was a fair aroma of sweet malts going on, with hints of biscuit and wheat coming through nicely. It was hard to detect any real hop aroma coming through, though the subtle spicy honey aroma could be down to the hops blending well with the malts.

When chilled, Locobeer Kaori no Nama started out as a nice crisp beer with the malts bringing a sweet caramel biscuit flavour to the beer, with only a fleeting aftertaste of them lying on the palate. The mouthfeel was smooth, with hints of creaminess to it, though the carbonation was a little on the soft side for my liking. Even when Locobeer Kaori no Nama had warmed up, the flavours were well balanced with each other, along with a subtle hop bitterness in the aftertaste.

Locobeer Kaori no Nama The Bottom Line

Locobeer Kaori no Nama is a decent attempt at a kölsch – it’s simple and drinkable.
