Brimmer Stout is a 5% dry stout from Brimmer Brewing, based in Kawasaki, Kanagawa. It’s part of their autumnal line up of craft beer and can be found in both bottles and on tap when on sale. And besides that, that’s all the information I could find out about this beer.

Brimmer Stout

A mysterious beer with a lack of information out there about it.

Brimmer Stout Aroma and Taste

Without having much to go on, besides knowing Brimmer Stout was a dry stout, it was going to be hard to review this beer. I like to know the ingredients and hops that go into a beer that I’m drinking – perhaps I’ve been brainwashed by reading labels of ingredients. I understand that breweries release speciality beers and some of the smaller craft beer breweries don’t have the spread of staff to cover all bases but some information would have been nice about it.

Brimmer Stout poured out a pitch black colour with a frothy slightly off-white tan head on top that quickly collapsed in on itself before clinging to the side of the glass, leaving a slight oily ring on top. The aroma was of chocolate, coffee, some hints of vanilla, and a some roasted cocoa – to be expected really but well-balanced.

There was a bit of astringency in the body, with the coffee flavours producing some bitterness on the palate. Though not unpleasant, it was a bit surprising. The beer followed up with a bold chocolate flavour with a slight vanilla and cream flavour quickly following up. A nice mix of flavours though Brimmer Stout did become a tad bitter when it warmed up. The aftertaste was the usual for a dry stout, with a bitterness followed up with coffee and chocolate.
