Shiga Kogen Baby Miyama Blonde is a 5% saison from Tamamura Honten, based in Nagano, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition line up and was first released in May 2016. As the name suggests, it’s the “baby” version of the Shiga Kogen Miyama Blonde. Shiga Kogen Baby Miyama Blonde is brewed using using Nishikimiyama rice and with additions of Shinshu hops and the hop varietal Loral HBC291 from the USA that was first released in 2016.

A lighter version of the Miyama Blonde it seems.

Shiga Kogen Baby Miyama Blonde Aroma and Taste

Shiga Kogen Baby Miyama Blonde poured out a very light golden yellow colour with a meagre amount of frothy pure white head that lasted throughout drinking, even remaining in the bottom of the glass when all the beer had been consumed. It had a strange citrus aroma along with a residual grassiness that is usually an indicator of a young fresh beer, or perhaps been overtopped and not settled down yet. There was also a musty sake-like aroma coming off from the rice, though there was a lack of Belgian yeast funk.

The body had an initial smooth texture though the citrus flavours soon brought hints of lemon and grapefruit punching through the malty body. The body was impressively clean on the palate, with no residual feeling of chemicals remaining after drinking. Shiga Kogen Baby Miyama Blonde would be refreshing on a hot summer’s day as the aftertaste was dry and citrusy.

Shiga Kogen Baby Miyama Blonde The Bottom Line

Shiga Kogen Baby Miyama Blonde is a nice beer but I much preferred the older sibling of Shiga Kogen Miyama Blonde.

I just drank a bottle of Baby Miyama Blonde, and then a bottle of Miyama Blonde (both bought at Okadaya in Nagoya last week). Both are nice and refeshing beers for a summer evening, but I cannot really taste a difference. Nice aroma, although I did not notice any sake.
