Y Market Session IPL is a 4.5% India Pale lager from Y Market Brewing, based in Nagoya, Aichi. The bottled version isn’t brewed by them rather, it’s brewed by Gotemba Kogen Beer / DHC Beer in Shizuoka. It’s the fourth bottle in the range of craft beer and is brewed with US Citra, US Simcoe, and US Mosaic hops to give it a final IBU of 55 units. At the time of writing, it is a limited edition beer in bottles but can be found on tap as well.

Y Market Session IPL

Bitter, bitter, bitter.

Y Market Session IPL Aroma and Taste

Y Market Session IPL poured out a golden yellow colour with a fair amount of clean white head that was frothy but quickly dissipated into a thin layer of head in the end. The aroma coming off of it was a dank piney skunk smell that only got stronger as the beer got warmer. It had a little hint of peppery spiciness to it as well as some faint of citrus too.

The bitterness though – are Y Market Brewing really sure it’s only got a bitterness of 55 as it tasted far more bitter than that. It’s hits you right away from the first sip and lingers right through into the aftertaste. The pine resin taste is in the body along with strong citrus hits of lemon and grapefruit. A lot going in without thinking about the malts too. There was a faint hint of caramel to Y Market Session IPL but it all comes back to the bitterness from the hops, which leave it finishing off dry and bitter. Did you get the hint it was bitter?

Y Market Session IPL One Line Review

It’s a Y Market Session IPL is a bitter bitter IPL and something that could do with some balancing.

I like Y Market Brewing and have been to their pub in Nagoya a couple of times. It is always surprising how many different beers they have on tap there. All are very hoppy, some quite bitter, but even the very bitter ones always have a strop hop aroma. But their bottles are a disappointment. Last year, I bought a few bottles of their Table Pils, and it tasted rather watery. This year, The session IPL misses the hop taste. Then there was one other beer I got last year in a bottle, I think it was the Hysteric IPA. That one was too bitter as well. Better go to their pubs and get the draft beers!

Agreed – the beers I’ve had from them on tap have so far been much nicer, but that could be due to manufacturing issues. I heard that their bottled beers are made at Gotemba Kogen rather than in-house.
