Kinshachi Black is a schwarzbier produced by Morita Kinshachi Brewery. We first came across it at World Gourmet in Yokohama during a tasting session a while back and picked up a couple of bottles for “testing” purposes. The trouble is, there is no mention of it on the Kinshachi Beer website so it’s unknown whether Kinshachi Black is a limited release beer or the website is just not being updated as it’s not the only beer that is either not listed or needs removing off of the site.

Kinshachi Black

Is it a limited edition beer or a permanent addition to the Kinshachi range?

Kinshachi Black Aroma and Taste

Kinshachi Black poured out a dark brown, almost black colour, but then it is a schwarzbier, so anything else would have been unexpected. The frothy, off-white head didn’t last long though and left to form a thin ring around the edge of the glass, though it was pretty solid. I was half-tempted to put a stick of chocolate in it and have a Japanese version of a 99 ice-cream. Like most schwarzbiers, Kinshachi Black had a faint aroma of coffee and roasted malts though on the thin side. Besides that, there wasn’t much going on in the beer.

Kinshachi Black is one of those beers that tastes like something you’ve had before but can’t quite put your finger on it. It reminded me of the Gotemba Kogen Schwarz we had a while back and also of the Yubari Coal Mine Schwarz, the first one being good and the second confusing. The body was light and dry but the heavy carbonation compared to those two beers put it odds with my ideas of a schwarzbier. Besides the regular flavours, there was nothing really in the aftertaste to keep me hooked.

Kinshachi Black One Line Review

While Kinshachi Black is a schwarzbier, there are plenty of other decent ones out there, the Coedo Shikkoku being a prime example.

Where to Buy Kinshachi Black

We picked up our bottle of Kinshachi Black from World Gourmet in Yokohama though we haven’t seen it anywhere else. GoodBeer had it but it was sold out at the time of writing here. World Beer Market had it in stock at the time of writing here.
