T0ki Mano Machine v2.0 is an 8% hazy double IPA from T0ki Brewery, based on Sado island, in Niigata, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, and is also part of their regular lineup, though according to previous iterations, it is a work in progress in terms of hops and alcohol levels. T0ki Mano Machine v2.0 is a collaboration beer with Obata Sake Brewery, which makes Manotsuru sake. There are two versions of T0ki Mano Machine v2.0 – one with sake yeast, this one that is being reviewed, and another that does not use sake yeast and is known as KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). Both versions are brewed using El Dorado, Citra, and BRU-1 hops.

T0ki Mano Machine v2.0 : Aroma & Taste

T0ki Mano Machine v2.0 poured out a very hazy dark golden orange colour with a thin amount of white head on top that left just a few streaks down the side of the glass though they were faint. The aroma was hop forward, with citrus notes of grapefruit and lemon, followed by some tropical notes of mango and pineapple. In terms of sake quality, T0ki Mano Machine v2.0 was quite light with its aroma of light fruitiness from the yeast, and didn’t actually let the flavours dominate at all. There was a touch of alcohol heat to the beer as it warmed up, not enough to burn the nose hair but enough to be able to pick it out.

The body to T0ki Mano Machine v2.0 began with a low, but smooth, bitterness that lingered in the background during drinking. As in the nose, the body was more hop forward than sake like, with once again a citrus and tropical quality to T0ki Mano Machine v2.0 coming through first – more of the grapefruit and lemon, with mango and pineapple being present. As the beer warmed up, it did let some of the sake flavours come through, with a touch of creaminess and rice like flavour being noted, along with just a touch of alcohol too.

T0ki Mano Machine v2.0 : The Bottom Line

The addition of sake yeast to T0ki Mano Machine v2.0 did lend it an interesting bite, but I would like to see how the base version is before trying this one again.
