Totopia Kenophobia is a 7.9% hazy double IPA From Totopia Brewery, based in Nagakute, in Aichi, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though like so many of the beers from Totopia Brewery we’ve had, it’s unknown whether this is a one off or part of their regular lineup. Totopia Kenophobia is brewed using Citra Cryo, Citra, Nelson, and Galaxy hops and takes its name from the fear of empty spaces – so does that mean if I am scared of empty spaces, then I should not open this beer and drink it all?

Totopia Kenophobia : Aroma & Taste

Totopia Kenophobia poured out a very hazy golden orange colour with a large plump white head on top that left some stringy lacing down the side of the glass. The aroma was initially one of sweetness that seemed to go on and on throughout drinking, perhaps actually getting stronger as Totopia Kenophobia warmed up. Luckily enough, there was enough of hop backbone to support the sweetness, with a citrus and tropical base that came through – lots of lemon, grapefruit and orange paired up with some mango and pineapple. As Totopia Kenophobia warmed up, there was a touch of booziness that came through and while it wasn’t a burning sensation, it was a little bit weird.

The body was a role reversal with the hops being at the forefront and the sweetness taking a backseat to the flavour. The hops brought more of the citrus and tropical notes to the beer – more lemon, grapefruit, et al – than in the nose, with the sweetness, while present, more restrained with a lingering note throughout. The alcohol booziness was also present but didn’t have such a pungency as in the nose. The bitterness was quite low in Totopia Kenophobia and did make me think about what I was drinking – was this really an IPA in hops only and not bitterness? It was really that low and smooth. The hoppy flavours lingered throughout drinking, and long after the beer had been drunk.

Totopia Kenophobia : The Bottom Line

Totopia Kenophobia is a mixed up beer – good at times, but then let down by its inconsistency.
