Fukuoka Daruma is an 8% hazy double IPA from Fukuoka Craft Brewing, based in Okakagi, in Fukuoka, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Fukuoka Daruma is a collaboration effort, with Ganso Hakata Daruma that was established back in 1963, and Fukuoka Daruma uses Cashmere and El Dorado hops.

Fukuoka Daruma : Aroma & Taste

Fukuoka Daruma poured out a hazy dull golden orange colour with a thin amount of white head on top that faded to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. I have to admit, it didn’t look very enticing to drink, but then most hazy beers often don’t in my opinion – but what do I know?! However, the aroma was more appealing that the appearance as Fukuoka Daruma had a light mango and pineapple twang to it, which, as the beer warmed up, became more citrusy with notes of lemon and orange mixing in along with the tropical fruits. There was also a touch of light malt sweetness to the beer and though the alcohol was relatively high, Fukuoka Daruma did a good job in hiding it among the hops and malt.

Though I didn’t like the appearance of Fukuoka Daruma, and as noted the aroma was much better, so was the taste of this beer. It began with a smooth bitterness that parted to a tropical flavour of mango and pineapple, which, like in the nose, gave way to a citrus body of lemon and orange tartness – definitely prickling up the taste buds as I wasn’t expecting it. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, with a long, lingering sweetness on the palate, and once again, the alcohol was well hidden in the beer.

Fukuoka Daruma : The Bottom Line

Fukuoka Daruma is a decent attempt at a hazy though its appearance could do with some work.
