Totopia Nyctophobia is a 10% hazy triple IPA from Totopia Brewery, based in Nagakute, in Aichi, Japna. Itā€™s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Totopia Nyctophobia is brewed using Citra Cryo, Idaho 7, Galaxy, and regular Citra hops. Like other beers from Totopia Brewery, the phobia being mentioned in the name of this beer is being afraid of the dark ā€“ so making a hazy triple IPA kind of makes sense but its a shame that an imperial stout wasnā€™t used *nudge nudge*.

Totopia Nyctophobia : Aroma & Taste

Totopia Nyctophobia poured out a dull hazy yellow colour with basically no head to the beer at all ā€“ the beer was carbonated for sure but to say that Totopia Nyctophobia was flat would be doing it a disservice. Itā€™s not always about the head in a beer but there are some people that would argue that you need to have one to properly appreciate the aroma of a beer. But fear not, Totopia Nyctophobia had a strong, pungent aroma of tropical and citrus fruits ā€“ mango and pineapple for the former, and a mixture of grapefruit, lemon, and orange for the latter. There was also a creamy note of oat in the beer but there were two bad things to come out of Totopia Nyctophobia as it warmed up ā€“ a grassy hop burn on the nose and a distinct kick of alcohol on the nose too. At 10%, it was to be expected, but it was rather potent in the beer and detracted from the hops.

The body to Totopia Nyctophobia started off with a big astringent bitterness to it with it being a cross between a hoppy bitterness and a citrus twist. The hops brought with them some mango and pineapple notes to the body of the beer, and combined with the oats, made Totopia Nyctophobia smooth on the palate ā€“ until it warmed up. At that point, the hop and alcohol burn came screaming back and made for some weird aftertaste on the palate. The sweetness to the body did help take off that edge somewhat but the burns lingered through.

Totopia Nyctophobia : The Bottom Line

Totopia Nyctophobia suffers from being too strong for its own good ā€“ a shame as the base hop flavours are nice but needs some QA testing before the next batch comes out.
