Totopia Pneumatiphobia is a 6.5% hazy IPA from Totopia Brewery, based in Nagakute, in Aichi, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup, and can be found in both cans and on draught. Totopia Pneumatiphobia is brewed using Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin, and Simcoe Cryo hops. As for the name, Pneumatiphobia is the phobia of spirits – I’m guessing not vodka and whisky spirits?

Totopia Pneumatiphobia : Aroma & Taste

Totopia Pneumatiphobia poured out a very hazy golden honey colour with a thin white head on top that faded to a few bubbles around the edge of the glass. With such a wide, open mouth to the glass, the aromas from Totopia Pneumatiphobia were punchy and vibrant with an initial passionfruit and pineapple tropical bouquet being followed up by a citrusy nose of lemon, grapefruit, and orange. The aromas were mixed in well with one another during drinking and had a light malt sweetness to the nose with no discernible off notes.

The body to Totopia Pneumatiphobia began with a smooth bitterness that was swiftly followed by a tropical and citrus concoction of flavours. The passionfruit and pineapple in the body were intermingled with the lemon, grapefruit, and orange flavours in the body making Totopia Pneumatiphobia a rather, and I shudder as I type this, juicy beer. The body had medium level of sweetness to it. There was a downside to the beer, and perhaps it was me, there was a grassiness to the body that seemed to be deliberate but for me, spoilt a well-made beer.

Totopia Pneumatiphobia : The Bottom Line

Totopia Pneumatiphobia is well-made beer for the most part – maybe you’ll like the grassiness but I didn’t.
