Kyoto Romp & Circumstance by Kyoto Brewing Company

Kyoto Romp & Circumstance is a 10% Belgian quad from Kyoto Brewing Company, based in Kyoto, Japan. Itā€™s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Kyoto Romp & Circumstance is brewed with Polaris and Aramis hops though itā€™s the sugars that went into making the beer with an interesting point being that kuromitsu sugar was used to give this beer a domestic spin. The Japanese name for the beer is ā€œIfuu Doudou (ē•°é¢Øå ‚ć€…)ā€, ā€“ a play on the Japanese name for Elgarā€™s Pomp and Circumstance which is written as ā€œifu doudou (ē•ę€–å ‚ć€…)ā€

Kyoto Romp & Circumstance : Aroma & Taste

Kyoto Romp & Circumstance poured out a deep ruby reddish brown colour with a large frothy off-white head on top that left some lacing down the side of the glass. I had unfortunately forgotten to take the beer out long enough for it to warm up, so I had to wait a good (it wasnā€™t) 30 minutes to ensure I got the full experience from Kyoto Romp & Circumstance.

And I am so glad that I did. Kyoto Romp & Circumstance had a light caramel aroma which combined with some stone fruits of plums and also raisins. The aromas were well balanced with a roasted sugar like quality to the beer and there was a touch of nuttiness and a medium aroma of alcohol heat as Kyoto Romp & Circumstance warmed up. It ended with a brandy-like quality to the aroma and my insides but all nice and warmed up.

Drinking Kyoto Romp & Circumstance was a pleasure as well. You could say that for all beers, but the flavours in the beer were so well balanced that it was hard not to rush to drink this. The light caramel malt body was dry, but had a medium body to it, though with the addition of kuromitsu, also had a roasted sugar quality to ti. The stone fruits of plums and raisins, combined with the lingering yet warming alcohol heat kind of reminded me of Christmas pudding. The lingering alcohol heat ensure the flavours remained into the aftertaste and left me wanting more.
