Totopia Geniophobia is a 7.4% hazy IPA from Totopia Brewery, based in Nagakute, in Aichi, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Totopia Geniophobia is brewed using El Dorado, Galaxy, and Nelson Sauvin hops. And as for the name, Geniophobia is the fear of chins – wonder why you would name a beer after a phobia of chins?!

Totopia Geniophobia : Aroma & Taste

Totopia Geniophobia poured out a hazy light orange-yellow colour with a medium amount of fluffy white head though it didn’t last long. The immediate aroma from the beer was one of orange and pineapple that was interspersed with some light lemon citrus notes. Totopia Geniophobia also had some malt sweetness present as it warmed up – not enough to dominate over the hops but enough to take the edge of the citrus notes. Totopia Geniophobia is advertised as having two different kinds of yeast used but I couldn’t determine if the yeasts were present in the flavour profile or not.

The body to Totopia Geniophobia began with a low bitterness that was quickly dominated by the hops. A large citrus and tropical body was present, with lemon, orange, and pineapple being the three flavours of note that made Totopia Geniophobia taste like some kind of juice from Tropicana – hope I don’t get sued for saying that. There was also a lingering malt sweetness though not enough to be cloying or overpowering. Thankfully, Totopia Geniophobia didn’t have any noticeable off-flavours such as hop burn or yeastiness, and was a rather pleasant beer from start to finish.

Totopia Geniophobia : The Bottom Line

I’m not afraid of chins and nor am I afraid of Totopia Geniophobia. A tasty hazy IPA.
