Open Air Dia de Lúpulo is a 6% aged IPA from Open Air Brewing, based in Kobe, in Hyogo, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Open Air Dia de Lúpulo is brewed as a regular IPA and then aged using agave wood chips. The hops used were Cryo Idaho 7, Mackinac, Cryo Citra, and Cascade with Mackinac being a new strain of hop for BeerTengoku. The name “Dia de Lúpulo” roughly translates to “Day of the Hops” or perhaps “Hoppy Day”.

Open Air Dia de Lúpulo : Aroma & Taste

Open Air Dia de Lúpulo poured out a hazy dull orange colour with a large, plump white head on top that collapsed to a thin layer of bubbles on top of the beer. The beer had a light woody sweetness with a big, bold bouquet of mango and pineapple coming through. I’m not too sure if the overall sweetness was boosted, or even supported, by the agave wood chips but Open Air Dia de Lúpulo did smell good.

The bitterness was surprisingly lower than expected, with perhaps the aged aspect of the IPA part taking the time to mellow out the hops. The hops though were present in flavour with the aforementioned tropical notes in the nose being present in the body, along with a slight citrus twang as Open Air Dia de Lúpulo warmed up during drinking. The beer finished off with a lingering malt sweetness and hoppy tropical flavour.

Open Air Dia de Lúpulo : The Bottom Line

Open Air Dia de Lúpulo was a tasty beer and one that I will be looking out for again.
