Coedo Chocolate Dunkel is 5.5% Dunkel from Coedo, based in Coedo, in Saitama, Japan. It’s part of their annual Valentine’s Day release and is a collaboration with Dandelion Chocolate, who supply a different strain of chocolate for each annual batch. Coedo Chocolate Dunkel can be found in both bottle and on draught, though the latter is rather rare outside of the Coedo and Tokyo area. Coedo Chocolate Dunkel also uses cacao nibs to increase the chocolate aspect of the beer and uses imported Aurora, Merkur, and Saphir hops.

Coedo Chocolate Dunkel : Aroma & Taste

Coedo Chocolate Dunkel poured out a dark brown colour with a large amount of frothy head that was a slightly off white colour, thought it didn’t last long before leaving a trail of bubbles down the side of the glass. The immediate aroma that came off the beer was one of chocolate and cacao – clearly a serious amount of chocolate had been put into this beer as those aromas really get up your nose, especially as Coedo Chocolate Dunkel warms up some more. Just in the background was an underlying biscuity breadiness from the malts that added a touch of sweetness to proceedings but even though there were supposedly hops used in the making of Coedo Chocolate Dunkel, I couldn’t detect anything.

Coedo Chocolate Dunkel unsurprisingly continued its chocolate theme into the body, with the main flavours being from the chocolate and the dunkel based being a supporting act in this beer. The chocolate was smooth and silky, with a little bit of dark chocolate bitterness, though as the beer warmed up, it had a touch of a grainy cacao flavour going on. The malts were present but seemed redundant with the strength of the chocolate going on, as the chocolate continued to linger on in the aftertaste.

Coedo Chocolate Dunkel : The Bottom Line

If you like chocolate, then you’ll like Coedo Chocolate Dunkel but the dunkel aspect was lost on me.
