Vertere Nucifera is a 10% imperial stout from Vertere, based in Oku-tama, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Vertere Nucifera takes its name from the Latin word for containing nuts, and it doesn’t lie as it is brewed using coconuts and cacao, along with vanilla and lactose, along with Fuggles and Belma hops.

Vertere Nucifera : Aroma & Taste

Vertere Nucifera poured out a pitch black colour with a surprisingly light coloured head on top that was fluffy and voluminous though it collapsed to a thin layer rather quickly, leaving some slight off-white flecks down the sides of the glass. The immediate aroma of coconut and chocolate was strong, but not overpowering, and combined with a coffee and vanilla profile, I could imagine a company like Yankee Candle trying to make something that smells as good as Vertere Nucifera. As it warmed up, the beer and not the candle, there was a touch of roasted malt aroma to the beer, but thankfully not in an acrid kind of way and though hops were used in the making of Vertere Nucifera, they could have been left out in all honesty as I couldn’t pick them out at all.

The body was akin to drinking something like a milkshake that had been made from pureed Bounty / Mound bars. That doesn’t really sound appetising to be honest, but the flavours were straight taken from that chocolate bar. The coconut and chocolate were the two main flavours; however, they were paired off against the coffee and vanilla couple, with neither really dominating throughout drinking. Close your eyes and you can easily pick out all of the flavours in Vertere Nucifera. It was a rather full bodied beer, and while it was relative light compared to some imperial stouts that contain a large amount of adjuncts, I couldn’t imagine drinking more than one, or perhaps two, of these.

Vertere Nucifera : The Bottom Line

If you like Bount / Mound bars, or you’re a coconut and chocolate fan, you’ll love what’s going on in Vertere Nucifera.
