Mizonokuchi Pale Ale is a 5% American pale ale from Mizonokuchi Brewery, based in Mizonokuchi, in Kanagawa, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup, and can be found in both bottles and on tap. Unfortunately, Mizonokuchi Brewery have not released anything about their hopping for Mizonokuchi Pale Ale though we do know that this was the first beer released from the brewery.

Mizonokuchi Pale Ale : Aroma & Taste

Mizonokuchi Pale Ale poured out a rather murkyish dark golden orange colour with a thin layer of white head that faded fast to a few bubbles at the edge of the glass. Thankfully, Mizonokuchi Pale Ale smelt better than it looked as it had a clean light citrus nose of lemon and grapefruit along with a touch of pine resinous nature just lingering under the surface. Never judge a book by its cover, but the appearance of Mizonokuchi Pale Ale could do with some work if their PR images are to be believed. As Mizonokuchi Pale Ale warmed up, there was a light lingering pilsner aroma in the background but it was mostly about the hops in the nose.

Perhaps Mizonokuchi Pale Ale should be drunk with a blindfold on as the body was, like in the nose, much better than the expectation of those appearance would lead you onto believe. There was a clear, if not slight, bitterness to the body, that had some notes of lemon and grapefruit present during drinking. Not enough to make your taste buds sit up and take note, but enough to waken some of them up. Mizonokuchi Pale Ale also had an underlying pine resinous note to it, though it was mostly about the citrus flavours in the beer. With the beer being quite light, I was surprised to note a subtle pilsner malt flavour to the beer that just laid under the hop profile in the beer.

Mizonokuchi Pale Ale : The Bottom Line

If Mizonokuchi Brewery can work on the appearance of Mizonokuchi Pale Ale, then they’d have a very good flagship beer.
