Open Air Prime Meridian is a 7% saison from Open Air Brewing, based in Kobe, in Hyogo, Japan. At the time of writing, it’s part of their canned and draught lineup though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. As the name suggests, Open Air Prime Meridian uses Meridian hops and also takes its name from the Prime Meridian line based in Greenwich, London, as Sir Airy was prime his role as Astronomer Royal, establishing Greenwich as the location of the prime meridian.

Open Air Prime Meridian : Aroma & Taste

Open Air Prime Meridian poured out a hazy dark golden yellow colour with a thin white head on top. The aroma was immediately one of saison yeast, with a light phenolic nose coming through. As the beer warmed up, more of the hop profile came through, though it wasn’t aggressive but more of a supporting note to the phenols. The hops brought a light citrus and berry quality to the nose, which was something different, but nice, to find in a saison. The malt was just about present but it was a very light aroma of sweetness that only really came through as Open Air Prime Meridian warmed up more and more.

With Open Air Prime Meridian being dry hopped, there was no aggressive bitterness to the drinking, though that doesn’t mean there wasn’t any. Just enough to be noticed, and perhaps prick up the taste buds but not enough to detract from the phenols from the yeast, that were the presiding flavour in the beer. The hops were firmly entrenched as a secondary flavour, with them bringing along a citrus and berry quality to the body. As Open Air Prime Meridian warmed up, there was though a touch of alcohol heat to the profile but it was a supporting flavour, rather than a distraction to what really was a decent tasting beer.

Open Air Prime Meridian : The Bottom Line

Open Air Prime Meridian was a little bit of an unexpected good beer that had a solid saison base, but did something different for the flavour. A good little find.
