Barbaric Jughead : Aroma & Taste

Barbaric Jughead poured out a hazy dark golden colour with a thin amount of white head on top that didn’t last long and left a thin rim of bubbles around the side of the glass. The aroma started off well with a light pine aroma present which was followed up by a citrus aroma of grapefruit and lemon. However, once Barbaric Jughead had warmed up, there was the unmistakable aroma of peach and plastic phenols – the sign of some stressed yeast or a fermentation that had been perhaps a touch on the warm side.

And it carried on into the body. That same peach and plastic quality that can make a beer, can also break a beer if it’s not supposed to be in that style – and Barbaric Jughead did that. With it being a west coast IPA, I was left wanting once the initial pine and citrus flavours had faded into what seemed to be obscurity as Barbaric Jughead warmed up. There was a sticky sweetness to the body, which meant those off-flavours just continued to remain on the palate. While Barbaric Jughead was finished off, it wasn’t done with a smile on my face.

Barbaric Jughead : The Bottom Line

How can a beer that tasted nice on tap, be this bad in the can?
