West Coast Before Dawn : Aroma & Taste

West Coast Before Dawn poured out a slightly hazy golden amber colour with a thin amount of white head on top that dissipated quite quickly. The aroma wasn’t your typical West Coast IPA aroma – there was just a smidgen of citrus presence in the form of grapefruit but there wasn’t any piney resinous character that I have come to love with a West Coast IPA beer. Nor was there much of a malt character to the beer. When West Coast Before Dawn had warmed up, there was a noticeable shift in aroma towards a melon and peach base instead – a very interesting shift it must be said.

The body to West Coast Before Dawn started off with a smooth bitter punch, that brought along the grapefruit, along with a papaya-like flavour. The only reason I noted that is because I had eaten a papaya a day before – it’s not often I eat them but West Coast Before Dawn did have a similar flavour to that. There was also some melon lingering in the background, but I did find myself wanting some resin notes, which left me wanting. After letting West Coast Before Dawn warm up a bit, there was just a touch of caramel malt flavour, but barely.

West Coast Before Dawn : The Bottom Line

West Coast Before Dawn made me realise that I do miss the classic West Coast IPA flavour of citrus and pine. It’s not a bad beer but calling it a West Coast IPA is a bit of a stretch.
