Craft Beer Shokudo Volta : The Bottom Line

If you go to Sapporo then Craft Beer Shokudo Volta should definitely be on your list of places to go as it combines a variety of beers and styles with some delicious food at a reasonable price in a fun and friendly place to be. The whole place is non-smoking, has no table charge, and prices include tax. The only downside I can think of to Craft Beer Shokudo Volta is that there is the dreaded table charge that rears its head – a shame.

Craft Beer Shokudo Volta Inside

Craft Beer Shokudo Volta : The Full Story

Confusion was the name of the day it seems on this beer trek around Sapporo as whenever I tried to find Craft Beer Shokudo Volta on Google Maps, it kept sending me to Beer Volta, which is based in Tochigi – a bit too far for a one day trip I think. However, I did have the Sapporo 2020 beer map on me, and the bar was in there.

Craft Beer Shokudo Volta opened in May 2016 and is located just around the corner from Susukino station on the Sapporo Namboku line and the Sapporo Shinden street cars. It’s a pretty easy place to find, mainly because of the front of the store standing out with its unique design in the area.

Craft Beer Shokudo Volta : Atmosphere & Interior

Craft Beer Shokudo Volta is styled very much like an old Japanese cafeteria with some interesting choices for seating. Both the tables and counter seats are pretty low – which suits someone like me with a long torso – but are surprisingly comfortable. The whole bar is seating only, with 40 seats at the benches along the wall, tables, and also counter seats. The whole place is non-smoking and has free wifi, but the downside is the dreaded table charge of 330 yen that popped up. This did include unlimited cabbage and sauce – simple but tasty – though the staff could have been nice to me.

Within 15 minutes of being at Craft Beer Shokudo Volta, the place began to fill up fairly quickly and by the time I left, the bar was over half full and air was filled with lively conversation and chatter. In the warmer months, they also have some outside seating area too.

Craft Beer Shokudo Volta : Approach to Covid-19

Like other places in Sapporo, Craft Beer Shokudo Volta follows the local government protocol to Covid-19 pretty stringently. When you go in, you have your temperature checked, there is alcohol spray around the bar, the staff were all wearing masks, and the usual poster advising of protocols and checking in was also present. The bar tried to implement social distancing as well during the time I was there.

Craft Beer Shokudo Volta : Beer & Tap Information

Craft Beer Shokudo Volta has 16 taps of beer on, though some two of these are dedicated to macro lagers and four are part of Tap Marche so let’s say there are 10 taps of craft beer on. There are plenty of different styles on with a spread across breweries from Japan, though they do have some imports on too. The beers come in three sizes: small (236 ml) at 540 yen, medium (330 ml) at 760 yen, and large (473 ml) at 980 yen. There wasn’t a happy hour, nor any beer flights on either. The prices also include tax though in the past I heard that they didn’t used to.

Craft Beer Shokudo Volta : Food Information

As you walk into Craft Beer Shokudo Volta, the sign states that they use locally grown and sourced though that is also organic and that is also emblazoned across the menu. The menu is mostly meat based, and its very reasonably priced but you will need to be able to read kanji for the pricing – guess they’re really taking the old school part of the shokudo name literally. If you can’t read the menus, then all the items on the menu do have pictures, which is pretty helpful, though they do suffer from McD syndrome in that what you see on the menu isn’t always exactly how it’s going to turn out. The dishes are pretty cheap, and start from around 100 yen, and go right up to 3000 yen.
