Otaru Weiss is a 5.5% German hefeweizen from Otaru Beer, based in Otaru, in Hokkaido, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both bottles and on draught across Japan. Otaru Weiss is brewed to a traditional German recipe and more than 50% of its grain beer is wheat.

Otaru Weiss : Aroma & Taste

Otaru Weiss poured out a very hazy golden honey colour with a massive amount of fluffy white head on top. The head stuck around for such a long time that I ended up giving up waiting for it to settle as I really wanted to see how the bottle version compared to the draught version I had mere days before. The aroma was unmistakably full of banana and clove, with just a touch of malt sweetness present. The bottle had been filled merely days before so super fresh and representative of what I had drunk at the brewery.

The body continued with the banana and clove theme and was also rather full-bodied but not filling. Though I drunk Otaru Weiss on a cold day in spring, it was still a very tasty beer and showed off how good a hefeweizen can be and how well a yeast can make, or sometimes break, a beer. The wheat brought a light creamy and nutty flavour that balanced out well against the phenols from the yeast.

Otaru Weiss : The Bottom Line

When Otaru Weiss is fresh, it’s a fantastic beer at a great price.
