Be Easy Romance is a 7% hazy IPA from Be Easy Brewing, based in Hirosaki, in Aomori, Japan. It’s part of their Valentine’s Day efforts for 2022, with this being a collaboration with a local chocolatier called Hirosaki Romance Chocolate. Be Easy Romance can be found in both cans and on draught. Be Easy Romance is brewed using cacao husks and nibs to add a chocolate nuance. At the time of writing, it’s unknown if this is a one-off, or an annual release.

Be Easy Romance : Aroma & Taste

Do not adjust your screens. What you are looking at is indeed a chocolate infused hazy IPA. I really had to do a double take on this as I was expecting this to be a lot darker than it poured out. In fact, the hazy golden colour was spot on for what I have come to expect from a hazy IPA. The head was just a few bubbles around the side of the glass, and those just popped away rather quickly. The aroma was a most peculiar concoction – light milk chocolate with some hot chocolate-like cacao aromas coming off, which then proceeded to change to a lemony and grapefruit nose. My brain was dumbfounded as to what was going on. If my eyes were closed, from aroma alone I would have guessed that someone had put two different beers in front of me.

Drinking Be Easy Romance was as peculiar as looking and smelling it. My brain knew that it was a hazy IPA, but my taste buds were left dumbfounded. The taste started off with a smooth velvety chocolate flavour washing over the taste buds, with some hot cocoa creamy flavour. Yet, as soon as things were settled in, a roller coaster of flavours began with a typical IPA flavour of lemon and grapefruit joining in for the ride. Very very confusing to say the least. The flavours then intermingled throughout the rest of drinking, being well balanced, and, well, tasty. The aftertaste was more IPA than chocolate but some creaminess remained on the tongue.

Be Easy Romance : The Bottom Line

I honestly did not think Be Easy Romance would work. It did and I was happily proved wrong – worth picking up and confusing your taste buds too.
