Yorocco Flor de Jamaica is a 4.5% saison from Yorocco Beer, based in Zushi, in Kanagawa, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught line up though it is a summer seasonal and it may not be on sale at the time of writing. Yorocco Flor de Jamaica is brewed using hibiscus flowers, or ajisai, to give the beer its colour and flavour.

Yorocco Flor de Jamaica : Aroma & Taste

It was on a trip around Kamakura that I came across a can of Yorocco Flor de Jamaica and was immediately taken by the artwork. Yorocco Beer have come a long way since their early days of bottling and some coloured labels.

Yorocco Flor de Jamaica poured out a dark pinkish red colour with a finger’s worth of ever-so-slightly pink head on top that faded to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. The aroma was a fruity floral one, with some sour notes from the yeast that had been used. Letting Yorocco Flor de Jamaica warm up was a good mistake – I got preoccupied with a video game – and then the beer had opened up somewhat to show off some citrus notes of lemon and grapefruit. I didn’t know what hops were used in the making of the beer but it was a nice detraction from the original aroma.

The body was pretty dry – the fruit sour and floral flavours were well received and more importantly, well balanced with one another. I’ve never eaten, nor felt the desire to try, hibiscus flowers but I can only assume that Yorocco Flor de Jamaica tasted like them. The accidental warming up meant that the beer had some citrus bite to the body, which was exacerbated by the lack of any real sweetness to the body. It all finished off with a slight floral flavour, but it didn’t last long.
