Taisetsu Akatsuki IPA is a 6% American IPA from Taisetsu Ji-Beer, based in Hokkaido, Japan. It’s part of their bottled and draught lineup though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Taisetsu Akatsuki IPA is brewed using solely domestically grown Ibuku hops and is meant to be a fresh hop beer – so it could possibly be an autumn seasonal beer. Taisetsu Akatsuki IPA takes its name from the Japanese word 暁, which means dawn.

Taisetsu Akatsuki IPA : Aroma & Taste

It’s not often we come across a new beer from Taisetsu Ji-Beer – like Hitachino Nest, they’re more about brewing beers for on draught rather than expanding their bottle range – so when we do find a new beer, you can bet we’re going to pick it up.

Taisetsu Akatsuki IPA poured out a golden orange colour with a fluffy white head on top that faded to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. The aroma was a mixed one of nice aromas – citrus and pine – though there was a musty cardboard aroma from the beer, which could either come have come from the hops or perhaps the bottling process. The malt was light on the nose, barely anything was noticeable.

The body had a subtle medium level of bitterness that faded quickly to leave a citrus and pine flavour to the body, though the musty aroma noticed in the nose was present in the body. It wasn’t potent enough to detract away from the beer, but it was noticeable enough. The malts were thin in the body and at 6%, the malts could have done with being a bit stronger, if just to mask the musty flavour.

Taisetsu Akatsuki IPA : The Bottom Line

Taisetsu Akatsuki IPA is a bog standard Japanese take on an American IPA – one that has been stuck on the shelf for a while and not properly looked after.
