West Coast Offtime is a 7% cold IPA from West Coast Brewing, based in Mochimune, in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their limited linup, though how long it is out for, and whether it will be released again is unknown at the time of writing. It is brewed using Citra, El Dorado, and Mosaic hops throught a triple dry hopping process, though in what amounts and for how long is also unknown.

West Coast Offtime : At A Glance

West Coast Offtime : Aroma & Taste

West Coast Offtime poured out a light golden orange colour with a thin amount of fluffy white head that faded fast to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. West Coast Offtime is only the second cold IPA I’ve had, with AJB Icy Double by Anglo-Japanese Brewing Company being the other, and that was a supercharged version of a cold IPA apparently. West Coast Offtime was more mellow in the aromas, with melon and grape being the predominant aromas, before warming up, ironically enough, to open up with some citrus notes of lemon and grapefruit. All in all, it was rather a more gentler affair than my previous encounter.

The initial bitterness was expected to West Coast Offtime, though it was rather soft and less abrasive than I had thought it would be. The flavours to the body was similar to the nose – melon and grape being the stronger pairing, with some lemon and grapefruit making an appearance, again, once the beer had warmed up. West Coast Offtime left a lingering fruitiness on the palate that felt quite natural in taste.

West Coast Offtime : The Bottom Line

I don’t get the hype behind cold IPAs, and if they’re here to stay, then aren’t they just IPLs, but West Coast Offtime was nice and I’d drink it again.
