Tokyo Aleworks Sagarmatha is a 5.5% American Pale Ale from Tokyo Aleworks, based in Itabashi, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap. Tokyo Aleworks Sagarmatha was brewed for the anniversary celebrations of Himalaya Table in Kanda, Tokyo and takes its name from the Nepalese word for Mount Everest.

Tokyo Aleworks Sagarmatha Aroma and Taste

Do not adjust your set – this is not a hazy IPA or pale ale – Tokyo Aleworks Sagarmatha did really pour out this hazy in colour. A deep golden amber colour with a plump white head on top that clung to the side of the glass. Had they gone for a beer that represents the image of Mount Everest, with clouds clinging to the top? Well it looked better than it smelt with a buttery, plasticky aroma that had some funky hop aroma going on that seemed to be more on the oxidised side, with a wet cardboard-like aroma to it. Tokyo Aleworks Sagarmatha also had some phenols too that were peachy and potent. Hops? I guess some orangey aroma coming through may have counted but it was hard to pin down to the hops or the yeast. In terms of malts, there was a strong sweetness to them, nothing that I have grown accustomed to with drinking American Pale Ales.

The body was as confusing as the nose – was Tokyo Aleworks Sagarmatha supposed to be, well, this messy? Phenols and plastic flavours going on, with a bitterness that wasn’t just from the hops. I really struggled to drink this one, with the sweetness from the malts, the weird oxidised hop flavour, and the unpleasant mix of flavours going on. The beer was well within its best before date and had been stored cold as well.

Tokyo Aleworks Sagarmatha The Bottom Line

Maybe this was better when fresh, but I couldn’t finish Tokyo Aleworks Sagarmatha.
