Monkey Red Ale by Monkey Mountain

Monkey Red Ale is a 5% red ale from Monkey Mountain Brewing, based in Oita, in Kyushu, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap. It uses a similar base to Monkey Pale Ale but with the addition of black malt to produce the red colour.

Monkey Red Ale Aroma and Taste

Monkey Red Ale poured out a deep copper brown color with a large amount of frothy white head – not a surprise really as it is bottle conditioned and this had been sat in the bottle for a couple of months. The caramel aroma was noticeable immediately, with it only getting stronger as Monkey Red Ale warmed up. There was barely any hop aroma coming through when the beer was chilled, and even when it had warmed up, it was just a faint aroma that smelt something like a noble-like one – not enough to get the hop heads excited.

With the amount of caramel flavour coming through in the body, perhaps the “red” aspect had been over-emphasised. It would have been nice to have had something to cut through the sweetness of Monkey Red Ale – maybe some citrus or some noble notes. The sweetness ended up becoming cloying towards the end of drinking; however, the slight sulphur and butteriness from the yeast helped to break up the monotony of that caramel flavour – maybe an intentional introduction of those “flavours”.

Monkey Red Ale The Bottom Line

Monkey Red Ale shows off what I dislike about red ales – one dimensional flavours.
