Devilcraft Citra Sunshine is a 5.5% California Pilsner from Devilcraft Brewery, based in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their bottled and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. California Pilsners are not a prescribed style it seems, with this being a take on a lager with extra hops added, in this case, imported US Citra hops.

Devilcraft Citra Sunshine Aroma and Taste

Devilcraft Citra Sunshine poured out a golden yellow colour and was quite clear, though there was a bit of haziness in the beer – not enough to classify it as hazy beer but there was some. There wasn’t much head either, though what there was was white and faded fast to leave a few bubbles around the side of the glass. The aroma was all citrus though – lots of lemon, with some grapefruit, and just a touch of diacetyl too – nothing too potent nor nose-turning, but enough to fit the style of perhaps a German or Czech style pilsner. The malt aroma was light, with just a hint of pilsner nose cutting through the hops.

The body was more bitter than your usual off-the-shelf pilsner – not quite IPA levels of bitterness but definitely up there with a solid American pale ale. The flavour profile was very much like the nose – lots of citrus notes going on, with some grapefruit too to boot and that’s how it kind of stayed during drinking. Some bitterness, some lemons, some grapefruit, a little bit of dusting of diacetyl, and then a hint of malt sweetness just peeking through. The aftertaste was mostly hoppy, with the lemons and grapefruit being the flavours that stood out.
