Locobeer Old American Bock is a 7% bock from Locobeer, based in Sakura, in Chiba, Japan. It’s part of their winter lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap. Locobeer Old American Bock is brewed to be a traditional doppelbock that Germans would have brewed when they first moved to The USA. However, since then, the style has deviated from what the German immigrants had first brewed.

Locobeer Old American Bock Aroma and Taste

Locobeer Old American Bock poured out a light ruby red colour, much lighter than a traditional German bock, with a small amount of white head on top that collapsed quickly to a few bubbles around the edge of the glass. The aroma was more malty than hoppy, with a distinct bready, caramel aroma to it, followed by a slight nuttiness to it. There was barely any hop aroma coming off Locobeer Old American Bock, with a subtle edge of noble hop-like aroma to it, but it was faint and fleeting in the end.

The body was similar to the nose in terms of flavour as well. The malts were bready and sweet, not in a cloying way, but they did have a caramel-like quality to them. The hops did bring a slight bitter noble edge, taking away some of the sweetness, though the hops didn’t take so much that the malt backbone faded. At 7%, the alcohol brought a faint edge of heat to the beer, though that was only when Locobeer Old American Bock had been given a chance to warm up somewhat. The aftertaste had a little bit of a sticky edge to it, and low amount of sweetness to it, though what flavours there were, faded.

Locobeer Old American Bock The Bottom Line

Locobeer Old American Bock is drinkable but not a patch on a proper German bock.
